58 Million Pounds of Corn Dogs Recalled After Customers Report Injuries

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced a recall impacting nearly 58 million pounds of The Hillshire Brands Company’s corn dog and sausage on a stick products. The reason: wood pieces in the batter, which allegedly led to reports of five consumer injuries nationwide.

The volume of the recall has been classified Class I, which is a health hazard situation where there is a reasonable probability that eating the food will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death.

What products are affected and where were they sold?

According to the FSIS announcemen, the problem was discovered after the company received multiple consumer complaints. An internal investigation by Hillshire Brands determined that the issue was isolated to their Haltom City, Texas  facility.

The recall involves corn dog and sausage on a stick products that may contain pieces of wood embedded in the batter. Brands like State Fair Corn Dogs on a Stick and Jimmy Dean Pancakes & Sausage on a Stick are among those covered.

The affected products were packaged over a seven-month period, from March 17, 2025, through September 26, 2025. Distribution was nationwide, shipping to retail stores, food service locations, schools, and Department of Defense facilities. The products bear establishment number “EST-582” or “P-894” printed on the packaging.

From the FSIS release: “The Hillshire Brands Company, a Haltom City, Tex. establishment, is recalling approximately 58,000,000 pounds of corn dog and sausage on a stick products that may be contaminated with extraneous material, specifically pieces of wood embedded in the batter, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today.”

Why the recall was issued

The company’s investigation pointed to a failure in the production line. Hillshire Brands determined that the contamination occurred because wooden sticks entered the production process prior to product battering.

FSIS is especially concerned that the recalled items are still sitting in refrigerators and freezers at homes, schools, and other institutions. Consumers are urged to take immediate action. “Consumers, schools, and institutions who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.”

Tyson Foods, parent company to Hillshire Farms, released a statement about the recall, “A limited number of products have been found to include extraneous pieces of wooden stick within the batter portion of the products, and out of an abundance of caution, the company is voluntarily recalling this product.”

“This issue is isolated, and no other State Fair or Jimmy Dean brand products are impacted,” the statement continues.
