The Trump administration introduced a new citizenship test Wednesday, a reversal from the Biden years; however, the test is still far too easy for aspiring Americans.
In 2021, President Joe Biden’s administration reverted to the 2008 version of the oral test that required immigrants to correctly answer at least 12 out of 20 questions, selected by administrators out of a total of 100 questions. On Wednesday, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced that it was returning to the 2020 naturalization test, which featured 128 possible questions on American history and civics, the Daily Signal first reported. The passing score of 12 out of 20 will remain the same and administrators are allowed to stop the test once the immigrant has either correctly answered 12 or incorrectly answered at least nine. Applicants are given two chances to pass this exam; failure to succeed on either attempt will result in the denial of their citizenship application.
Some of the questions include “Name one thing the U.S. Constitution does,” “Name one war fought by the United States in the 1800s,” “Thomas Jefferson is famous for many things. Name one,” “Name one example of an American innovation,” “Name the three branches of government,” and “What group of people was taken and sold as slaves?” You can check out the full test here.
“American citizenship is the most sacred citizenship in the world and should only be reserved for aliens who will fully embrace our values and principles as a nation. By ensuring only those aliens who meet all eligibility requirements, including the ability to read, write, and speak English and understand U.S. government and civics, are able to naturalize, the American people can be assured that those joining us as fellow citizens are fully assimilated and will contribute to America’s greatness. These critical changes are the first of many,” USCIS Spokesperson Matthew Tragesser said.
And I would hope the changes are the first of many, considering that the new test is hardly an improvement from the Biden version.
If American citizenship is “the most sacred citizenship in the world” — which it is — why are immigrants only required to answer 12 out of 20 questions? Maybe the numbers should be more like, say, 75 out of 100 correct, a solid C grade. Maybe bring it up to the B range.
Twelve out of 20 doesn’t scream sacred to me.
